Who Pays For A Land Survey?

Land surveys are typically paid for by the person who is requesting the service to be performed. In many cases, the surveyor may require full or partial payment for the services up-front or prior to beginning the work.

However, when a survey is performed in conjunction with a real estate purchase, the survey can be paid for by either the buyer or the seller. If a buyer asks for the seller to cover a portion of the closing costs for the purchase of the property, the survey can be built into the costs at closing.

Surveyors are very familiar with working with title companies for payment. Invoices and drawings are sent to the title companies and they will then add the cost of the survey to the settlement statement which is presented at the final closing. The title company will then pay the survey invoice through the funds that are escrowed at closing.
