NSPS/ACSM Explained: Why These Organizations Are Important to Property Owners

by | Aug 25, 2025 | Uncategorized

If you’ve ever investigated land surveying, you may have come across the acronym NSPS. That stands for the National Society of Professional Surveyors, a national organization dedicated to advancing the surveying profession. Here in Missouri, we also have the Missouri Society of Professional Surveyors (MSPS), along with local chapters such as the St. Louis Chapter.

In 2012, NSPS merged with the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM), bringing together expertise, resources, and advocacy to better serve surveyors and the public.

Why These Organizations Are Important

Much like other professional associations, these organizations exist to keep surveyors “in the know.” They provide education, share the latest advancements in technology, review case studies, and keep members updated on important legislation that affects property owners and real estate. They also give surveyors the opportunity to network, collaborate, and grow within their profession.

At the heart of it, these organizations ensure that surveyors continue learning and remain relevant in today’s ever-changing world.

The Role in Licensing and Accountability

Another critical responsibility of NSPS, MSPS, and similar organizations is their involvement in licensing. To practice as a professional land surveyor, you must either:

  • Hold a state-issued license, or
  • Work directly under the supervision of a licensed surveyor.

These organizations help oversee licensing exams, continuing education requirements, and the ongoing professional development of surveyors. In doing so, they hold surveyors accountable and ensure the public can trust the work being done on their property.

Simply put, these organizations safeguard both the profession and the people who rely on it.
