Google Maps vs. Reality: The Truth About Property Boundaries

by | Mar 1, 2025 | Uncategorized

It is hard to not trust the information that we get from the Internet. You should be cautious when using Google or the county assessor to look at aerial photos of your property.

These sites will show you your home within a few inches. There are times when this is incorrect and wrong…

You are wrong.

We get people calling us every year who are horrified that the assessor has drawn the property line right through their home. It is possible that this isn’t the case. There may have been a change in the overlay of graphic information system (GIS). If you believe in Murphy’s Law, you won’t risk being that one person whose property line runs right through your home.

The homeowner in this case had assumed that the map of the assessor was accurate for more than a decade. The new owners decided to have a boundary survey done when they were ready to sell their property. During our research, we discovered that the deeds didn’t “draw the exact same picture” as the map that was provided by the assessor. The assessor’s office worked with us to correct the mistake and accurately represent the location of the property.

Remember that this did not have any legal effect on the property of the homeowner, as the deed details were recorded accurately. The goal of a boundary survey is always to make it known what you own. Another example of the impact a boundary survey can have.
